Memorable and contrasting experiences in India and California

Sr Magdalen Hughes

I was professed as a Presentation Sister in 1949 and shortly afterwards sailed for twenty days to India. On arrival I travelled by train all the way down to Madras, a couple of us in our white habits. I began my mission working in an orphanage and I also undertook teacher training. I stayed in that region for decades.   I have wonderful memories of going to our hill school and doing thirty mile hikes, climbing to the highest peaks.

The pupils were a joy to be with and I still recall their wonderful and joyful singing. We had a school for girls of mixed faiths and it was a hugely enriching experience. Once the local Governor visited and commented: “You young women must realise how fortunate you are – you’re all getting on, despite religious differences.  You’re like a small league of nations...Take all of that away with you when you leave.”

Such strong bonds were formed that we still meet every year in London! I’ve stayed in touch with many of them, despite the passage of time. They often say, “We always remember the Sisters and what they said to us.”

In 1970 I was transferred to California. What a contrast! We were opening a convent in Sacramento. I recall a lot of the grandparents spoke only Italian. The families were so supportive, particularly with fundraising. Later I was sent to Los Angeles which again, was a hugely memorable time, working with many families.

I returned to the UK in 1986 and began parish work in a wide variety of places including Manchester, Huddersfield, Leicester and Matlock.
